Angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors and angiotensin II receptor blockers (ARBs)

L’Agence Nationale de Sécurité du Médicament et des Produits de Santé (ANSM) France has reminded health-care professionals that the use of angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors and angiotensin II receptor blockers (ARBs) are contraindicated during the second and third trimesters of pregnancy and not recommended for use during the first trimester. ACE inhibitors and ARBs are indicated for the treatment of hypertension in adults. The ANSM stated that, despite the recommendation not to use ACE inhibitors and ARBs during the first trimester and the contraindications in the second and third trimesters, pregnant women continue to be exposed during pregnancy, which may have serious or even fatal consequences for the fetus or new born.
